Subject: Access Server Questions
Date: October 9, 1990

QUESTION: A couple of questions came up today about the access server:
1) Will it run on a Compaq 486 DeskPro? In testing other
applications, the user has found that some will see almost a
50% performance improvement with a 486 as opposed to a 386
machine and they want to optimize performance.
2) IBM Source Routing. They tried to use source routing
(the v3.1 drivers) and could not open the adapter. They
replaced them with the nonsource routing drivers and it
works fine. They are running source on all of their file
servers and want to put the Access Server on the backbone.
Is this a known problem?
ANSWER:
1) With the Compaq 486 DeskPro, this is not something that
we have tested currently. However, we have heard from
customers who are running the Access Server on the 486
DeskPro. They report no problems and do notice an increase
in performance.
2) This is a reported problem that can be fixed by running
DEBUG on IPX.COM or IPX.SYS. Technical Support in Sunnyvale
has a PTF (Program Temporary Fix) for it.
